Senior Researcher, Head of the Laboratory of Edible Fungi and the Mushroom Research Unit of the Institute of Institute of Technology of Agricultural Products (ITAP) in Athens. Edible and medicinal mushroom specialist and consultant. Pre- and post-graduate studies at the Agricultural University of Athens (Faculty of Agr. Biotechnology). Ph.D on Edible Fungi. Specialization on mushroom cultivation at (a) C.C.O, Horst-The Netherlands (1988); (b) SAAS, Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Shanghai, China. Specialization in the production of edible and pharmaceutical mushrooms. His research interests are in mushroom Biotechnology, Fermentation Technology. More than 25 years of research and participation in 16 research projects concerning edible and medicinal fungi: a) Food Biotechnology, Fermentation Technology, production of novel foods and products from agro-industrial byproducts, study of pharmaceuticals and functional foods with immonomodulating and therapeutic properties, b) edible and medicinal mushroom cultivation on lignocellulosic agricultural wastes, c) studies on the parameters influencing pre- and post-harvest mushroom quality attributes, d) mushroom physiology during storage and packaging, e) bioremediation through mushroom fungi. Reviewer in many international scientific journals and evaluator in USA and EU research programmes. Member of several National and International Societies. Author of more than 70 papers and written contributions in scientific journals and congresses.
